Muter Construction served as general contractor for the roof replacement of South Building at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill — the most significant project on the building since 1927.
South Building has stood at the heart of the UNC campus since 1798. Home to the offices of the Chancellor and senior university leadership, the building is one of the most historically significant structures in American public higher education.
The project included a full copper roof replacement across 7,500 square feet, repairs and modifications to the roof deck, and extensive restoration of the cupola. A custom copper finial and weathervane — recreated to match the originals — were installed by bucket lift with a temporary street closure, using a compass to ensure precise directionality. The new uncoated copper will slowly oxidize over the next 25 years, eventually matching the iconic blue-green patina of the Old Well just across Cameron Avenue.
