It takes grit, determination and a fire in the belly to start a successful construction company.
Muter Construction is a woman-owned construction firm offering services in commercial construction delivered under a variety of formats including general contracting, design-build, construction management, and program management. In 2022, we celebrate 10 years in business and are expecting to grow our revenue to more than $50M. More importantly, we have grown a team of amazingly talented people who have delivered exceptionally well-crafted, award-winning facilities across the state. At the end of the day, we feel fortunate to call both our employees and our project partners friends.
Our company was founded by Beth Muter, CPA, and John Muter who left high-level executive positions with nationally recognized construction firms to found Muter Construction. Believing in themselves and betting on their ability to build a construction firm like no other, they invested their entire savings and launched the company from their kitchen table. They haven’t looked back.
Beth and John surround themselves with the best and brightest in the industry and empower them to deliver an exceptional experience for our clients, trade partners, and suppliers. Construction is a team sport and it takes an entire team, bringing their A-game every day, to deliver the quality of work our company is known for.
BS, Accounting – University of North Carolina at Greensboro
Beth is our all-around rockstar, knower of all things accounting and best boss ever. She leads our Muter team with mad business skills, conviction and an enormous heart. With an impressive 25+ year career as a high-level financial wizard in the construction industry, she ensures we stay the course with keen oversight and a proactive approach. She’s also a huge advocate for diversity and inclusion in the construction industry. Having built our company from the ground up, she understands first-hand the obstacles many small, minority-owned companies face and works to mentor our trade partners in understanding how to navigate insurance and bonding requirements as well as cash flow for their businesses.
Beth is an active member of both trade and community organizations, including the NC MWBE Coordinators’ Network, the National Association of Women in Construction and the Carolinas AGC. She’s currently serving on the Carolinas AGC AIA/AGC Joint Committee.
When she’s not working, Beth loves traveling and hosting friends and family at home. With a creative and funky style that you would never expect from an accountant, Beth is the consummate hostess cultivating the coolest spaces ever! When you are a guest of Beth, you instantly feel like the bee’s knees! We’re secretly hoping she will start a blog. If you work here, please know that Beth will absolutely remember your birthday, your kids’ names and spoil you rotten.
John Muter
BS, Construction Management – Bowling Green State University
John is all about relationships, that’s why we love him! He’s a team builder with deep empathy and a passion for seeing others do well. He’s also a gifted problem-solver, which makes him a great asset to any construction team. After spending 35+ years with the region’s most successful construction firms, he left it all behind to start Muter Construction and has absolutely zero regrets. Zero. John works closely with Beth to guide the company and ensure we stay true to our mission of creating customers for life!
A key player in implementing the first CMR legislation in North Carolina (SB914), John continues to consult on important issues facing the construction industry and the state of North Carolina. He currently serves on the Innovations Committee for the Carolinas AGC and is a member of NAIOP, the North Carolina Economic Development Association, IFMA and has served as a member of the NC State Construction Office/CAGC Joint Committee; the NC AIA/CAGC Joint Committee; the CAGC Foundation (building trustee) and as Chairman of North Carolina’s State Building Commission.
A huge outdoorsman, John loves spending time racing dirt bikes, ATVs, hunting and fishing. He’s also been known to play a round of golf or two and is totally intentional about creating time for both family and friends. Life is too short.
Hank
Hank has all the power. He’s always got a seat at the table and quite frankly, has the whole place wrapped around his finger. An avid walker, he ensures everyone in the office gets their steps in! Typically, the first one in the door in the morning, he’s always the last to leave. Unless there’s a snack involved.
