ECU Whichard Building
This transformative renovation of the historic Whichard Building breathes new life into one of the university’s architectural landmarks. Originally built in 1923 as the campus library, the solid brick, two-story structure has since evolved—serving as a music instruction hub in 1954 and later as home to the Admissions Department in 1967. Now, it’s being thoughtfully reimagined for the future.
The project includes a full interior renovation—removing all interior walls, stairs, and outdated mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems—rebuilding from the inside out to meet today’s building codes and performance standards. Modern accessibility will be a key feature, with the addition of a new elevator serving both floors of the original building and its annex.
To unify the space and enhance flow, the existing breezeway and exterior stair will be removed, and a new enclosed, conditioned connection will be constructed between the two structures. Once complete, this iconic building will become the new home for the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences’ administrative offices, along with dedicated office space for the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature—creating a vibrant new academic and administrative hub at the heart of campus.
