Morehead-Cain Foundation Renovation
Established in 1945 by John Motley Morehead III, the Morehead-Cain Foundation created the first merit scholarship program in the United States, modeled after the Rhodes Scholarship. The Foundation, which was rebranded in 2007 following a sizeable gift from the Gordon and Mary Cain Foundation, funds four years of undergraduate study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Morehead-Cain Scholars are leaders of high character and intellect who seek to leave a positive impact on UNC and on the world. Scholarship recipients receive full tuition, room & board as well as unparalleled access to Study abroad programs and Summer enrichment activities for 4 years at Carolina.
Morehead-Cain’s Mission is to: Identify, Invest, and Empower the next generation of leaders. To supplement the University curricula, the Summer Enrichment program is focused on: Outdoor Leadership, Civic Collaboration, Global Perspective, and Professional Experience.
The Morehead Planetarium Building consists of the historic 1949 wing, or Morehead Building, and the Morehead-Cain Addition, built to the east, in 1974. The building presently houses program, educational and administrative space supporting multiple tenants, primarilyMorehead Planetarium & Science Center and the Morehead-Cain Scholars Program.
This project will fully renovate that portion of the interior of the building occupied by the Morehead-Cain Foundation, repair & improve the exterior building envelope (including the roof), as well as renovate associated utility spaces located in the basements of both the addition and the original building.
Improvements to the base building environmental systems are expected, including but not limited to: HVAC, plumbing, electrical, emergency power, Fire Alarm, and Fire Protection. Improvements to the building utilities and entry points will be evaluated for inclusion in the project as part of this design effort.
